We know that memory gets weak with age, just as with other things of our body – further study shows that short-term memory is impaired during stress periods. Yet science shows now that the brain can develop at any point of life with the right motivation. This means that our memory doesn’t have to get worse, it can get better actually. This is how.

Meditation has been shown to successfully relieve stress and improve sleep, as well as to help the memory. A new study in Cognitive Brain Science reveals that fast, frequent meditation not only increases memory and memory comprehension but also improves carefulness. Feed your brain

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are important to a healthy brain and are equally vital to our memory. They function by strengthening the membranes of the brain cells and the nerve cells and regulate inflammation.

Seek proper dose of the same consulting your doctor. It is also shown that vitamin B12, found mainly in eggs, helps memory and education, protecting the same cells of the nerve. Make sure you take this into account in your diet.

Have you tried fasting?

As Professor Mark Mattson, a neuroscience professor at Johns Hopkins University, explains, fasting can do incredible things for the memory. “When we fast, we use energy stored in the liver, and once they are exhausted, generate ketones that are high energies for the brain nerve cells.”

Two of the most popular fasting plans are the 5:2 diet – where you eat normally for five days a week and cut back to around 500-600 calories for the remaining two – and time-restricted eating, which essentially means extending the time you are not eating between dinner and breakfast, and ultimately working towards eating only within an eight-hour window.

Push your brain

The brain likes to face a challenge – the more it overcomes and the more it can perform. You may think that your strong readings are enough to allow your memory to be protected, but it is not good enough because, as Dr Richard H. Carmona, former US general surgeon, points to in his book Canyon Ranch: 30 Days To A Better Brain.

Improve your brain with Exercise

Professor Mattson says that if there is anything better than fasting for the brain, it is both preparation and fasting at the same time. This is especially useful to memory and learning, as it generates neurotrophic brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which stimulates new neurons, in particular in the hippocampus where long-term memories are structured.

Aerobic exercise (e.g. swimming, running or cycles) is particularly helpful in memory and education. Try to run or swim in the morning before you break up quickly every day.
