Scientist | Cryo-Electron Microscopy | Lead Discovery | Roche

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world. That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.
In our Lead Discovery (LD) department in Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), we integrate diverse protein and cell science disciplines to drive the discovery of transformative new medicines. We are dedicated to delivering therapeutic breakthroughs for patients in oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, rare diseases, neuroscience, and infectious diseases.

The Structural Biology group within LD contributes to drug discovery projects by X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), NMR spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. In close collaboration with Protein Science and Computer-Assisted Drug Design colleagues, the group also designs protein constructs and ensures the impact of structural biology on projects. We have well-established infrastructure and workflow for X-ray crystallography, and we are currently panning a high-end cryo-EM facility on the Roche Basel campus together with our building infrastructure and research informatics colleagues.

The position
Join us and help us shape our new cryo-EM facility! In this position you:

  • Contribute to the establishment of a state of the art cryo-EM facility at the Roche Innovation Center Basel
  • Work on all aspects of cryo-EM from grid preparation to structure determination – with a focus on running a high-end cryo-electron microscope and data processing.
  • Ensure that cryo-EM data of the highest quality are collected and processed with high-throughput for maximum impact on drug discovery
  • Work as an individual contributor in a matrix organization, collaborating closely with other structural biologists, protein scientists, IT specialists, and the microscope vendor
  • Evaluate and establish novel technologies and methods together with internal and external partners towards improving the efficiency of our cryo-EM facility.

What else are we offering?
We are dedicated to support our staff in the development of their knowledge and skills and offer further career opportunities where people demonstrate talent and aptitude.

Who you are
We are seeking a highly qualified and committed scientist with a passion for drug discovery and wanting to apply their skills to the benefit of patients with unmet medical needs.

  • You have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in physical science, engineering, or live sciences.
  • You have worked > 5 years at a world-leading cryo-EM facility where you have contributed substantially to the implementation, operation, and maintenance of modern cryo-electron microscopes
  • You bring a deep comprehension of microscopic hardware and are able to troubleshoot minor problems yourself
  • You possess a solid understanding and experience in automated data collection, processing of raw micrographs and 3D reconstruction of single particles
  • You efficiently apply all major relevant software packages (RELION, cryoSPARC, cisTEM, EMAN) and have extensive experience with Linux-based programming
  • You are able to prepare and freeze grids, and you understand all aspects that drive the overall success of the cryo-EM pipeline.
  • Experience with protein production and characterization as well as electron diffraction or tomography is a plus.
  • Beside excellent experimental and scientific skills, you are motivated to broaden the area of your expertise permanently
  • You communicate efficiently and adapt to a wide range of audiences
  • As a team player, you work efficiently within your group and with teams of diverse scientific backgrounds
  • You are a resourceful solution seeker who overcomes obstacles with a sense of urgency to drive projects forward.
