Dr. A. Velumani said a study of his Thyrocare company’s 2.70 000 antibody studies in the entire of India found that antibody had already been detected in the average 26% of population.

“This is a much higher percentage than we had expected. The presence of antibodies is uniform across all age groups, including children,” Velumani told Reuters.

The findings from Thyrocare correspond to government surveys in Indian cities such as Mumbai which show that 57% of its population has been exposed to COVID-19 in its crowded slum areas.

Velumani added, that the Thyrocare survey covered the last seven weeks, and tested patients in 600 Indian cities. If this pattern persists, by the end of December the percentage of antibodies in India will reach 40%.

There are a total of 2.8 million in India today, with the third only global behind Brazil and the USA, and less than one-quarter of the total number of active patients according to figures of the health ministry.

On Wednesday, more than 64,000 new coronavirus cases were reported in the second-most populous country of all, over the same period, with more than 1000 deaths.
