Following the reporting of 80,097 new cases, India was the first country in the world to register 80,000 cases of Covid-19 in a single day on 30 August. Compared to last week, the total weekly average of Indian coronavirus cases has doubled.

According to the recent National Statistical Office (NSO) data, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth contracted by 23.9% in the first (April-June) quarter of 2020 compared to the same period (April-June) in 2019. It is the sharpest contraction since India started reporting quarterly data in 1996.

3. In May, this year during the lockdown, India had the highest unemployment rate ever at 27.1 per cent

The unemployment rate in India rose to 27.1 per cent in the first week of May, according to CMIE, leaving 121.5 million Indians unemployed.

The rising unemployment comes as India continues to remain under lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic. This was the highest unemployment rate so far and the unemployment rate has risen because of a surge in the labour participation rate from 35.4 per cent in the week of April 21 to 36.2 per cent in the week ended May 3, Mahesh Vyas, Managing Director and CEO, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), wrote in an article in April.
