What is NDMA? Explore the term. National Disaster Management Authority, abbreviated as NDMA, is an apex body of Government of India, with a mandate to lay down policies for disaster management.

NDMA” is an apex government agency of India with a mandate to lay down disaster management policy. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Disaster management should be understood as a ‘continuous and integrated process in which measures to the prevention of hazards and threats, mitigation and risk reduction of disasters or their consequences, build capacity, prepare themselves to deal with disasters, mitigate or reduce the risk or seriousness of them.

National Disaster Management Authority was established by the Government of India’s Disaster Management Act of 23 December 2005. In order to ensure an integrated and distributed approach to disaster control, NDMA has responsibility for setting policies, laying down guidelines and best practices for coordination with the State Disaster Management Authorities(SDMAs).

It is headed by India’s Prime Minister and can have up to nine additional members. Four other members have existed since 2014. If necessary, a vice-president is provided.

National Disaster Management Authority aims ‘to build a more secure and disaster-strengthening India by means of a comprehensive, proactive, technologically driven and sustainable development strategy, involving everyone and fostering a culture of prevention, preparation and mitigation.’

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) calls on India’s Ministers / Departments for continued lockdown measures up until 31 May 2020.

Other Government officials, institutions and the community are equipped and trained by the National Disaster Management Authority to mitigate and respond to crises or catastrophes. It works closely with the National Capacity Building Institute. It develops practices, provides practical training and organizes disaster management exercises. It also equips and trains state and local disaster management cells.
