Why Are Companies Boycotting Facebook Ads?

Facebook sees advertisers dissatisfied with their treatment of hate speech and disinformation, including their stance toward President Trump’s latest comments, becoming progressively boycotted.

The campaign came under the scrutiny of civil rights organizations such as the National Colorful Individuals Empowerment Association and the Anti-Defamation League in earlier June. Colour of Shift, one of the boycott-supportive parties, said that almost 100 advertisers joined.

Many of the participants are small companies that make up the majority of 8 million advertisers on Facebook. But, lately, many major companies have distanced themselves too, which invest millions of dollars a year on the site. Some also stop their Twitter and other social media sites and Facebook advertising.

On Friday the company said in a statement that Facebook spends millions of dollars a year to keep its services safe and works with external experts to review and update their policies. But “We know more work needs to be done.” he added.

As a result, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a number of updates to Facebook’s “connecting people with authoritative voting information, cracking the suppression of voters and fighting hate talk” live Friday on Facebook.

Zuckerberg claimed that the amendments are “directly linked to the input of the group of civil rights and represent months of work with our auditors.”

How is it that Facebook advertisements are boycotted?

Last week, the # StopHateforProfit movement was launched by a coalition of advocacy groups led by the NAACP, Colors of Improvements and ADL calling on businesses to stop ads on Facebook in July.

The campaign comes with the nation moved by protests over the assassination of George Floyd, and corporate America faced enormous pressure to reaffirm its commitment to initiatives for racial justice by means of actions, not just words.

The groups stated in a joint statement that the campaign was a response to the long history of Facebook that allows racial, violent and verifiably false contents on its platform. “The campaign will organize corporate pressure and pressure from the public to demand that Facebook stop generating ad income from hateful materials, support people who are racist and hate targets and increase security, among other measures, for private groups on the platform.”

The organizations accused Facebook of enabling posts inciting violence against demonstrators calling for racial justice, silencing Black users on the site and failing to protect them from online attacks, as well as enabling the site to be used as part of “widespread voter suppression campaigns, using targeted misinformation directed at Black voters.”

Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement: “Facebook remains reluctant to take substantial steps to remove political misinformation from its website.”
